Do I Need A Root Canal?

There are some common symptoms that might indicate you need a root canal. These include:

  • A persistent and painful tooth pain
  • Swelling in your jaw
  • Bumps on your gums
  • Tooth sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Discoloration in your tooth

The only way to be certain of whether or not you need a root canal, is to schedule a quick exam with our experienced dentist, Dr. Darren Dickson. During this exam he will assess your tooth and recommend the best course of treatment.

Learn More About Root Canal Treatment

Contrary to popular belief, a root canal does not have to hurt, especially when performed by Dr. Dickson and our talented dental team. Root canal treatment is actually designed to help you feel better.

The soft inner part of a tooth is known as the pulp. When you have a cavity that goes untreated, or the tooth suffers injury, then eventually decay and infection can reach the pulp. The pulp contains the tooth’s root canals, nerves, blood vessels, and other tissue. Once the pulp becomes infected, you can experience a great deal of pain. Root canal therapy is usually required at this point to cure your pain and save your tooth.

Your smile will be in good hands at My Dentist in Plano. Dr. Dickson has performed many root canal procedures over the years. However, if for some reason he can’t do yours, he’ll bring in a trusted dental specialist to take care of you right in our office.

Root canal treatment starts with getting a clear picture of what’s going on with our i3D Smart CT machine. These detailed images help us make a plan to place a tiny hole in the top of the tooth, through which we will clean out the infected pulp. Next, Dr. Dickson will disinfect the pulp chamber and carefully repair the canals inside the tooth.

A rubber-like material called gutta-percha will then be used to seal the root canals and help prevent reinfection. Finally, we’ll close the hole in your tooth with composite resin, the same material we use for tooth fillings.
